Outlook Settings and IMAP

People who use Outlook are so used to Outlook settings that they find it a problem when they have to open up their browser to check their email. Outlook settings are such that users of Outlook do not need to open up their browser. There are a number of Outlook settings that make this possible; one of these Outlook settings is called IMAP.

Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is a type of email service provided by Web-based email services such as Gmail. When you have an IMAP account, you can filter it through your Outlook 2007, eliminating the need of opening a browser and logging into your IMAP account each time you want to check your messages. Outlook settings such as these often need to be set manually. Changing your Outlook settings can be a tedious and hard process. But there are a number of service providers that can help you change your Outlook settings. The Outlook settings for IMAP to be put in place are given below:-

  1. Obtain server information from your provider. This includes the names of the outgoing and incoming services, port numbers and authentication settings.
  2. Launch your Outlook 2007. Click “Tools” in the main menu bar. Scroll down and click “Account Settings.”
  3. Choose “Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP or HTTP” and click the “Next” button.
  4. Put a check mark in the box next to “Manually configure server settings or addition server types.” Click the “Next” button. Put the radio button next to “Internet E-mail” and click the “Next” button.
  5. Type in your name, email address, the names of the incoming and outgoing servers, your user name and password in the next window. Click the “Account Type” drop-down and choose “IMAP.” Put a check mark in the box next to “Remember password.”
  6. Click the “More Settings” button. Depending on your IMAP account, you can adjust your server information under the “Outgoing Server and “Advanced” tabs. This includes port numbers and authentication settings.

With the IMAP set you can access your email without you accessing a browser. The modification of these Outlook settings will ensure that your Outlook 2007 runs to its full potential.
